Jun 15, 2004· I seem to recall that the first recipe for petrobond (3-4 years ago) listed far more alcohol activator. Namely 1 pound of alcohol for 3 pounds of bentone. I have access to Rheox (mfg) data and that is what it indicates. They also recommend methanol, ethanol or propylene carbonate mixed 95% to 5% water be used for activator.

When I make an impression into petrobond I have to be very delicate in pulling it out otherwise it messes up a lot. I personally find delft clay to be a much better product. Don't get me wrong, petrobond is still good. Bottom line, petrobond is ok for open pour design, but for closed casting I recommend Delft.

The advantage of Petrobond and similar oil sands, and greensands, is that they can be reused repeatedly with occasional topping off with fresh oil or water/clay. The recipe you have there looks very much like one for cores.
